10:00 AM - 05:00 PM
Horace Mann School Building
2410 E Cherry St, Seattle
What do you get when you combine a 100-year old school building, BEAN volunteers and our resident handyman, Chris Stevens?
We call it, “Extreme Makeover: Schoolhouse Edition” and you can call it the most rewarding way to spend your weekend!
On Nov. 20 and 21, we’re combining the volunteer forces of BEAN with the community forces of the Central District and helping transform the historic Horace Mann school building into a refuge for the vulnerable youth of Seattle. (see www.workitoutseattle.org for more info).
Under the guidance and direction of Chris, we’ll be stripping, sanding and refinishing the school’s centurion hardwood floors. These floors are older than dirt but we’ll make them shine once more! No experience is necessary.
So here’s the plan: This project will be divided over Saturday and Sunday, with two shifts each day (yes, followed by celebration eats and drinks at a nearby location). And we need all the help we can get, so if you want to sign up for more than one shift, please do! They are:
******* SATURDAY, Nov. 20 *******
10am - 1pm: Working in sections, we’ll start by applying the stripping solution (yes, with masks). After that sits for a few minutes, we’ll use putty knives to scrape up 10 decades worth of coatings, varnish and finish. Be dressed to get dirty! THIS SHIFT NEEDS THE MOST PEOPLE! Be part of the start! Continental breakfast will be provided too.
1pm - 5pm: As we continue to work on the scraping, we’ll also begin sanding the completely striped sections with large sanders. Depending on how far we get, we’ll either start applying the first coat of varnish, or start that on Sunday. Pizza dinner will be provided, followed by a half-a-block trip over to Twilight Exit (early shift people are welcome to come back and join us).
******* SUNDAY, Nov. 21 *******
10am – 1pm: All sections should be striped at this point so we plan to begin/continue applying the floors’ first coat of polyurethane coating. This will be done with spongy roller brushes and Chris showing us the how-to. Again, continental breakfast will be provided!
1pm – 5pm: First coat application continues. Yes, it’s an art and you’re gonna love it. Again, we’ll be treated to a pizza dinner and, if we liked it the previous night, another trip to Twilight Exit (or we'll vote on a back-up location).
Seriously, BEAN’sters, of all the service events BEAN does, this is probably the most hands-on and meaningful project we’ve had the opportunity to be a part of. When almost half of all minority youth in Seattle fail to graduate high school, this is our chance to make a difference the entire city will benefit from. Come get your hands dirty with us and you’ll be so glad you did!
Yours in Service,
- Lisa Smith

MANY Thanks to all who have rsvp'ed so far! We're building quite the team! Between all the websites we've got this event listed on (6 of them!), we have more than 45 volunteers signed up for shifts! Thanks for noting yours here and I can't wait to get to work with you all next weekend! - Lisa (:
