What IS this?
BEAN holds an annual date auction as our biggest fundraiser for BEAN’s Think Global Act Local (TGAL) campaign. We auction both silent auction packages (think kayak tours, theater tickets + dinners, wine tastings and museum tickets, etc) as well as bachelors, bachelorettes and associated dates. What cause is BEAN benefitting this year?
In this fundraising and awareness campaign, BEAN is working with local nonprofit Vittana, which facilitates micro-lending to aspiring college students in countries such as Paraguay and Vietnam. These countries do not have the banking or government infrastructure to support student loans, and all that separates these young people from higher education and vocational training is an amount as small as $300. The loans not only enable these students to complete their education, but also empower them to increase their potential earnings by as much as 300 percent, allowing them to better support their families and improve their communities. And even more exciting – once these students pay back their loans, the money is loaned out again to other needy students, meaning the money BEAN donates will continue to help students for years!
