Meet Alejandra - The 2012 BEAN Seattle Scholarship Recipient

Thanks for supporting the BEAN Seattle Scholarship Program!

We'd love to introduce you to Alejandra, this year's BEAN Scholarship recipient. She's a wonderful young woman who just graduated from high school and will be a Freshman at UW in a month, hoping to major in Society, Ethics and Human Behavior. Furthermore, she wants to pursue a Masters degree in education and aspires to be a college access counselor where she can help students like herself apply to universities and figure out how to pay for college.

Alejandra is also an example of where your money goes when you support the BEAN Seattle Scholarship Program by attending Sounders games, going to fundraising BEAN trivia events or karaoke nights and the annual Flip Cup Tournament.

Alejandra is a perfect example of someone who embodies BEAN's tenets of friendship, leadership and service. During her senior year, she and her friend gathered educational resources for undocumented students, created informational packets in both English and Spanish and hosted a career night event to raise awareness of opportunities to students to pursue higher education regardless of their immigration status. She also has volunteered, been a tutor and participated in several clubs and activities including founding and becoming President of the Latino Students United group. This level of leadership and involvement is probably why she received the Cleveland High School "Service Above Self" Award.

The BEAN Scholarship is important to her because it will help her pay for college and pursue her dreams. She'll be the first person in her family to finish college. Once she's at the UW, she's excited to meet new people and will keep volunteering with her high school and her community.

More importantly, we asked Alejandra what we - BEAN members or young professionals - could do to further help her and other students. Her response is that she would love for us to share our stories with high school students and aspiring university students. How did we get to where we are? How did we get to college and start our careers once we graduated? It's important for us to connect to students like her, pass down our wisdom and help them with their futures.

Thanks again for supporting the BEAN Scholarship Program.
